MARCH 5-6, 2003, Gatlinburg, Great Smoky Mountains, Tennessee

My favorite place on earth is the Great Smoky Mountains.

This is just one of many, many trips I've taken to the Smokies. On this trip we got up early and hit Cades Cove as soon as it opened. There are generally more animals active early on and less of a crowd. This was March of course, and there weren't many of either, animals or tourists.

On our second day, we went to the Ripley's Aquarium of the Smokies. It had been voted best aquarium in America, and I can see why! Of course, I was still learning the ropes with my new digital camera, and taking photos indoors against glass meant many of the wonderful creatures that we saw weren't captured quite so well on my camera.

Two of the churches in Cades Cove. Above is the Primitive Baptist Church, and below is the Methodist Church. Each have a small graveyard next to them.

Before heading to the Aquarium, we stopped and had lunch at the Nascar Cafe in Pigeon Forge [which sadly is no longer there]. This is one of Dale Earnhardt's cars that they have on display.

Ripley's Aquarium of the Smokies is an awesome experience. Many of the lagoons are viewed from tunnels along moving sidewalks, and multitudes of fish all around you. They also have an area called Stingray Bay and Touch-A-Ray Bay. The little guy above was so friendly and kept swimming back to where we were for more touching. Below is a massive Sawfish that swam over while we were in one of the tunnels under Shark Lagoon. And at the bottom is the massive jaw of the extinct shark, Megalodon.
