FRATERVILLE MINE DISASTER MEMORIAL

May 19, 1902

ANDERSON COUNTY, TN

About 2 miles from the site of the mine lay 89 of the 216 miners who died in the Fraterville Mine Disaster on May 19, 1902. The circle is located in Leach Cemetery in Lake City(formerly the town of Coal Creek), just down Hwy 25W and east of State Route 116 from the town of Fraterville. Of the 216 who died, only 184 were identified, many of the others were itinerant workers. The itinerant workers were taken to an area near the mine to be identified and claimed by family members. Those who were not claimed were buried in a small cemetery, with graves marked by fieldstones, that now sits in someone's backyard.

The Miners Circle here is on the National Register of Historic Places.

The town of Fraterville lost all adult males except for three.
The youngest to die in the explosion was twelve years old.

For much more information about the mines, the disasters, and the area,
please visit the Coal Creek Watershed Foundation website.
