Hurricane Katrina

May 11, 2009
On Monday August 29, 2005, a huge hurricane struck the Mississippi coastline in the early morning hours. The eye passed between Bay St Louis and Pass Christian. From Waveland to Pascagoula, about 50 miles and at least 1/2 mile inland was almost completely destroyed. Wiped clean of any sign of civilization in many places.

My mom lived there. She had an apartment in Long Beach, the next town east of Pass Christian. Her apartment was maybe 100 yards from the beach. You could see the Gulf from her porch. And after the storm all that was left was the concrete slab. That's it. Thankfully she and my nephew had evacuated further inland. They have not moved back.

I visited the area 2 weeks after the storm. My sister was also living in the area at the time, on the SeaBee Naval base in Gulfport, but her family's home only suffered minor damage. I also visited again in August 2007, nearly 2 years after the storm. I will be posting photos from both trips. I have not been back.
