Hurricane Katrina Damage
in Mississippi

Photos taken

2 Years later-August 2-5, 2007

My mother lived in Arbor Station Apartments in Long Beach. Her building was destroyed, nothing left. Photos here will show that. We did not find much when we went to visit. My sister lived on the Seabee Naval Base. Her home had minor wind damage, but she was forced to leave the home by the Navy. My mother has relocated to another state. Sister and family are back in Gulfport at the Seabee base.I'm not sure we will ever get back, which truly saddens me. I hadn't spent much time there, on the coast, since my brother-in-law had only been stationed there about a year and a half ago, but it had grown on me. I loved the history, as I do with any place.

It has taken me a few months to get over the shock of seeing what I saw when we went down there within weeks of the storm. Words cannot describe the devestation there. From what I have seen of New Orleans, it doesn't even compare to the destruction along the coast of Mississippi. When we went to the Mississippi coast(2 weeks after the storm), there were roadblocks everywhere. We could only get to certain areas. I do look forward to returning, but I have no idea when it will be. It could be years.

Linked here are photos from my trip on September 17, 2005. You can choose from this list, or start at the first one and follow an alphabetical tour of towns. Also linked only here are photos from around the Arbor Station Apartments, where my mom lived.

UPDATE: I have returned. It did take years. Two years. It made me very sad to see the Mississippi coast has not changed much in 2 years. There is not a single gas station along Hwy 90 from Biloxi to Pass Christian. I'd estimate 90% of beach front property is now just empty lots. A few homes here and there have been rebuilt. Huge condos are going up in many places. I saw one single open souvenir shop on the coast. I am changing these pages to reflect, "Before"(if I have a photo of it), "2 Weeks Later" and "2 Years Later". I also managed to make a trip to New Orleans, where I saw nowhere near the type of destruction that was inflicted upon Mississippi. Some flooded homes do not equal an entire town almost completely vanishing. I'm sick and tired of hearing how Katrina hit New Orleans. It did not. Take a look at these photos and tell me who got hit.
