Westover Parish Church Cemetery
Charles City County, Virginia

As the historical marker says, the original site of the church(see Old Westover) was a mile or so west, near the Westover Plantation, owned by William Byrd. The location changed around 1730 and the present church was built. The oldest readable grave I could find was for a Thomas Weir who died in 1748(4th photo). Also buried here is Major Augustus H Drewry. The Civil War Battle of Drewry's Bluff was fought across the river and closer to Richmond on land owned by Drewry. He was in command of the Southside Artillery who arrived March 17, 1862 and began fortifying the area; on May 15, the Union's USS Moniter and other ships attempted to sail up the James to Richmond but were stopped by the force at Drewry's Bluff. After the War, he purchased Westover Plantation, which is just upriver from this church.

Location: Hwy 5, along the James River, just north of Evelynton Plantation and about halfway between Williamsburg and Richmond
