This was the grave site selected by the President of the United States, however he ended up being buried in Hollywood Cemetery in Richmond. The site is just to the front of the plantation home. The only graves there now(that I am aware of) are those of the President's favorite horse and many other pets of the President and the families who lived there after he died.
Location: Hwy 5, also known as John Tyler Memorial Highway, just northwest of Williamsburg Visited: 2003 |

GRAVE SITE SELECTED BY PRESIDENT TYLER IN 1859 John Tyler died on January 18, 1862. His body, draped by a Confederate flag, lay in state in the hall of the Confederate Congress, of which he was a member, in Richmond. A solemn train of one hundred and fifty carriages, stretching a quarter of a mile, followed the hearse. Because of the Union occupation of Sherwood Forest by Federal Armies, President Tyler was buried in Hollywood Cemetery in Richmond, overlooking his beloved James River. His grave is marked by a magnificent marble monument, a gift of the Congress of the United States of America. |
