Salem ME Church Cemetery
Charles City County, Virginia

The historical marker on Hwy 5 reads:
SALEM CHURCH. This church, four miles north, was used as a field hospital, June 1864, following the action at Nance's Shop, where the Union cavalryman Gregg, guarding a wagon train, was attacked by Wade Hampton. Gregg was driven from the field but saved the wagons. Wounded soldiers were brought to the church and some of the dead were buried there."

This is one of four former Methodist Episcopal church sites in Charles City County(Charles City Chapel, Micah, Salem and Mt Pleasant). They were torn down in the 1950's when a new church was built near Charles City Courthouse. The marker(like similiar ones at the other sites) reads:

"This stone, dedicated September 11, 1960, marks the site of the former Salem Methodist Episcopal Church, built before the War Between the States. Salem was second in age among the four pioneer charles City Methodist Episcopal Churches, which in 1943 merged to create Memorial Methodist Church at Charles City Courthouse. In 1864, Salem served as a field hospital for both Northern and Southern soldiers. A number of Federal soldiers, who were buried at Salem later were removed to Northern cemeteries. The church was closed during the 1930's and the dwindling congregation worshipped at Mt Pleasant until the merger."
