One of four former Methodist Episcopal church sites in Charles City County(Charles City Chapel, Micah, Salem and Mt Pleasant). They were torn down in the 1950's when a new church was built near Charles City Courthouse. The marker(like similiar ones at the other sites) reads: "This stone, dedicated April 25, 1960, marks the site of the former Methodist Episcopal 'Charles City Chapel' and symbolizes the enduring spirit of the men and women who, for almost a century, kept the church alive. The meeting house erected in 1855 often was sustained through the efforts of a faithful few. The 'Chapel', nevertheless, contributed strengthening leadership when, in the 1940's, the four colonial Methodist Episcopal Churches of Charles City merged and built Memorial near the county seat. The Chapel was closed for services in 1948 when Memorial Methodist Church formally opened." Location: Sturgeon Point Rd(Rt 614) , about one mile north of Rt 615 Visited: Dec 2003 This was a few months after Hurricane Isabelle, some of the damage here can be seen in the last photo. There were several trees down and a few fences and markers suffered damage from them |
