This was the home of Benjamin Harrison V and birthplace of United States President William Henry Harrison. Colonel Benjamin Harrison was a Signer of the Declaration of Independence. The small graveyard contains members of the Harrison family as well as the Jamieson family. Of Benjamin Harrison's ancestors, Benjamin Harrison I is buried at Old Jamestowne Cemetery, Benjamin Harrison III is buried at Old Westover Church Cemetery. Benjamin's II and IV are possibly buried at Brandon Plantation across the river.
John Jamieson was a field musician as a boy with the Union Army when they were camped here during the Civil War, and he returned years later to buy the home and restore it. John's uncle, Walter Jamieson, also served in the Civil War. He was issued the Medal of Honor in 1898 for the following acts: Voluntarily went between the lines under a heavy fire at Petersburg, Va., to the assistance of a wounded and helpless officer, whom he carried within the Union lines. At Fort Harrison, Va., seized the regimental color, the color bearer and guard having been shot down, and, rushing forward, planted it upon the fort in full view of the entire brigade.
Please note, there is a fee to tour the home and grounds here.
