Appomattox Confederate Cemetery
Appomattox County, Virginia

Some of the final casualties of the War Between the States. There are 19 men buried here. They were originally buried where they died, but local volunteers moved them here in 1866. There are eighteen Confederate soldiers and a single Union soldier who was found at a later date nearby. Only seven of the Confederates have been identified. The small cemetery and memorial to those who died in defense of the Confederacy is about a half mile from the Appomattox Court House, the spot where Lee finally surrendered to Grant in April of 1865.
