Smith Cemetery
Sumner County, Tennessee

Historic Rock Castle was built by General Daniel Smith in the late 1780s. Smith was a surveyor who had been sent out, with friend James Sanders, to survey the North Carolina lands that were given as land grants to the soldiers of the Revolutionary War. He also helped to survey the young city of Nashville in 1784. Smith served in the Revolutionary War himself, as well as a US Senator in later years.

One daughter, Polly, was married to Samuel Donelson, brother of Rachel Donelson Jackson. They eloped in 1796 with the help of brother-in-law, Andrew Jackson. Samuel died only about 8 years later, and she married James Sanders(himself a widower) in 1806. When James and Polly died they were buried in Sanders Cemetery, across Drakes Creek. It is said that sometime in the 1900s, a descendant had Polly's grave removed to the Smith family cemetery at Rock Castle. However James was reportedly not moved, although his tombstone sat at the back of the Rock Castle home for years. It is now sitting beside Polly's grave, but whether or not he is buried there is not really sure.
