#19 Barksdale Cemetery

Smyrna quadrangle. Located off Carter St. Unknown number of graves. Surnames include Barksdale. Local lore says that Confederate General William Barksdale was buried here after he was mortally wounded at Gettysburg, however he is actually buried in Mississippi. His family however may be buried here. His father, William Barksdale, died in 1834 and the family did live in the area. It is also said that about 40 Union soldiers stationed here at a fort, died of Cholera and were buried in a mass grave. It is also most likely that they were later moved to Stones River National Cemetery. There are no markers to be seen, but there is a small fenced in area at the back of the Mitchell-Moore Cemetery located here that is said to be where the graves are at. When I visited the Mitchell-Moore, I was not aware of the additional graves in the back, but that area was heavily covered in brush.
This photo was taken in the summer of 2009. The area was far too overgrown to search for headstones.

#20 Barlow Cemetery

This small cemetery was once on the Baskin farm, and sits 100 yards west of where the Baskin home was(site of Barfield Elementary now?). The few graves here are no longer surrounded by a fence, and the small area has been covered in concrete. It sits between 2 homes on Southridge Blvd. Only 4 graves are marked, not certain if more are buried here. Oldest known grave is of Tabitha Cantrell Baskin 1881-1919.

Smyrna quadrangle. Located at Bass farm on Baker Rd. About 24 graves. Surnames include Bass, Avent, Batey, Blackman, McGuire and Oldham. Oldest known grave is of Revolutionary War Patriot James Bass Sr, 1755-1826.

#27 Bass Cemetery

Smyrna quadrangle. This small fenced cemetery sits next to a large old home on a small road between Baker Rd and Blackman Rd. Many new homes have been built on this road in the past few years. When I visited the cemetery in 2004, it was extremely overgrown and filled with old barrels and trash. I have not stopped by it since then. The graves inside were difficult to read, as can be seen from the photos. The oldest known burial is of James Avent Bass, 1868-1898.

#28 Batey Cemetery

Rockvale quadrangle. Located south of Shores Rd . Two graves. Surnames are Batey. Oldest known grave is of Revolutionary War Patriot Capt William Batey, 1760-1835. There is(was) a cenotaph located about a mile south of here along Hwy 96, next to the grave of an Unknown Confederate soldier. It is listed with photos here as Batey/Unk CSA soldier. The cenotaph was missing the top half with the inscription when I visited in 2002. The graves of Capt Batey and his wife are on a farm and are box type markers.

#29 Batey Cemetery

Smyrna quadrangle. Located on Inez Rd in the front yard of a home. About 2 graves. Surnames are Batey. Oldest known grave is of Tabitha M Batey, 1820-1849.

#30 Batey Cemetery

Smyrna quadrangle. This small family cemetery was at the front of an old farmhouse, along Waldron Rd and just north of Rock Springs Church. In 2007, the old farm was removed and a new subdivision is being built. A new fence was added around the graves and the marker for George Rowland Batey was uprighted and fixed. There are 3 marked graves, there is a note that a 4th grave of an infant is here as well.

--- Zack Taylor Batey Cemetery

Smyrna quadrangle. This small, fenced cemetery has not been listed in any of the books written about Rutherford County Cemeteries, that I can find. It is at the back of a home. There is one large marker listing those buried here, as well as a few smaller and broken markers. Located on Chadwick Dr. Visited in March 2005.

#31 Baugh Cemetery

Smyrna quadrangle. Located on Blackman Rd. Small fenced, well kept cemetery. About a mile and a half north of Blackman and Manson Pike. The Baugh graves are the oldest here. Some of the other graves are marked by homemade markers or parts of a broken box tomb. There have been fairly recent burials here as well. Other surnames include Rowlett and Singleton.

#32 Beesley Church Cemetery

Murfreesboro quadrangle. The first gathering here, around 1805, was called the Overall Primitive Baptist Church. It would be changed to Beesley Primitive Baptist Church, and the church was built around 1820. One of the founders, John Beesley, was the first pastor. Either he, or his son Solomon Beesley, gave the land for the church and cemetery. I do not believe John Beesley is buried here, but many of his very large family are, as well as others from the congregation, including co-founder of the first church, Nathaniel Miller, 1783-1874.

The churchyard has probably around 150-200 burials, which includes a fenced area closest to the church and an area near the woods with many unmarked graves(possibly slaves?). I have photographed most of them and hope to get a complete list with photos online at some point. Surnames include Beesley, Baskin, Barrett, Haynes, Rowlett, Smith, Williamson and many more. The oldest marked grave I could find was of Thomas J Wray, 1797-1839.

#33 Bell Cemetery

Walter Hill quadrangle. Located on Old Nashville Hwy. Small family cemetery, fenced and well kept. Thirteen, possibly fourteen, marked graves(one could be a footstone). Surnames include Bell, Dement, Coursey, and Petty. Oldest marked grave is of James Thomas Bell, 1839-1897.

#33A Bell Cemetery

Murfreesboro quadrangle. Located off Rowland Rd. Two graves. Surnames are Bell. Oldest known grave is of WM Bell 1836-1903.

#34 Bellah Cemetery

Dilton quadrangle. Located on Bellah Ct. When I found this small cemetery in 2003, it was extremely overgrown, so I only took a photo of the woods from the street. There are said to be about 14 graves inside the wall(with only 5 being marked), and many unmarked graves outside of a small rock wall. Surnames are Bellah and Wasson. Oldest marked grave being of Elizabeth Bellah, 1799-1811

--- Benevolent Cemetery

Murfreesboro quadrangle. Located off Park Rd. This African-American cemetery was originally started by the Benevolent Lodge in the early 1900s. There are about 300 graves here. The original lodge deeded the land to a church, but eventually they could not afford the upkeep and the area has gotten very overgrown. It sits between a warehouse and storage facility, with its back up against the railroad tracks. When I went looking for it, I had trouble finding a way in and eventually just took a photo showing how overgrown it is. A few taller markers could be seen, but that was all. There are said to be many markers here, but until the overgrowth is gone it would be difficult to document.

#35 Bennett Cemetery

Rover quadrangle. Located on Mt Vernon Rd. About 50 graves. Surnames include Bennett, Morgan, Owen, Ray, Russell, Scott, and several others. Oldest known grave is of Mary Elizabeth Morgan, 1826-1838.

#36 Bennett Cemetery

Smyrna quadrangle. Located ooff Rocky Fork Rd. This small cemetery sits behind a home, but can be seen from a dirt road that leads to several farms that runs beside it. Most of the markers are down and cannot be seen from the road. There are possibly about 20 graves here. Surnames include Bennett, Shelton, and Alexander. Oldest known grave is an unknown sandstone marker with the date of 1844.

#37 Benson Cemetery

Readyville quadrangle. Located off Goochie Ford Rd. Two known graves. Surnames are Benson. Oldest known grave is of Eller Benson, 1858-1876.

#40 Bingham Cemetery

#43 Blackman Cemetery

Rockvale quadrangle. Located north of Shores Rd. About 30 graves. Surnames are Blackman. Oldest known grave is of Polly Blackman, 1799-1826. These graves are basically only marked by fieldstones. We searched for this graveyard in the woods in 2005 but never found it. In 2009, new subdivision is being built near here-still have not located these graves.

#44 Blackman Cemetery

Rockvale quadrangle. Located off Vaughn Rd in a field. About 15 graves. This small cemetery is out in the middle of a field. Surrounded by a limestone wall, I've rarely seen it cleaned out. When I finally ventured out to it, the growth made it difficult(and painful) to get photos of all the markers. Located here is the grave of Alfred Blackman, for whom the community of Blackman is named, his wife, mother and most of his children. His father, James, is said to be buried in the Blackman Cemetery(#43) off Shores Rd. His oldest son, Raiford, and his family are buried in the third Blackman Cemetery(#42), which is south of Manson Pk, about a mile southeast from this one.
Click here to see photos of each headstone here.

#56 Bradley Creek Baptist Church Cemetery

Milton quadrangle. Located on Bradley Creek Rd. Mid-sized churchyard cemetery, fenced and well-kept. Graves range from the mid-1800s to present. There are also several limestone cairns without any inscriptions(the ones with flat stones across the top appear to have had an inscription at one time, but are completely unreadable now). The first church at this site dates to 1806, started by Thomas Bradley. As far as I could tell though, there are no Bradleys buried here.

#57 Bradley Creek Missionary Church Cemetery
