The church here was organized in 1802. Many Baptist churches in Tennessee would find differences in interpretation of scripture in the 1830s and split into "Primitive" and "Missionary" churches. This church would split in 1839, with this site being the home of the Missionary Church. A one room log cabin was built near this site in 1860. That was replaced in 1881, and that one in 1955 with the current church building. Many historic families of Townsend are buried here, including members of the Shields family, formerly of Cades Cove.
