HAZEN'S BRIGADE CEMETERY
RUTHERFORD COUNTY

Located just southwest of Stone's River Battlefield and Cemetery, on east side of road. This is a tour stop, with parking and markers. The monument was built by soldiers in 1863 for Col William B. Hazen, whose troop fought in this area. This is believed to be the oldest, intact Civil War monument still standing in its originial location. There are 56 members of the brigade buried around the monument. I also noticed 2 more recent burials just outside the wall-see last photo.

I recently found out the story behind these two burials. The first was for a free black man who owned this land after the war, and wanted to be buried on his land. The Park service allowed him to be buried where he wished. Later, a descendant, and veteran, also requested burial on this land, and was granted such.
