St Louis Cemetery No 1
New Orleans, Orleans Parish, Louisiana

Oldest surviving New Orleans cemetery, established in 1789. Also, arguably the most famous with the reported burial site of Voodoo Queen Marie Laveau(see page 4 of photos here) and it's proximity to the French Quarter. It was seen in 1969's "Easy Rider", which featured Dennis Hopper and Peter Fonda cavorting amongst the crypts and on the Italian monument(see Page 2). They did not have permission to film, and most films since then have filmed in Lafayette Cemetery in the Garden District.

Location: At the edge of the French Quarter on Rampart, New Orleans
Visited: Oct 2004, and numerous other times
When New Orleans was founded in 1718 burials were made on the river bank. The first cemetery, in 1721, was on St Peter Street. Burials were also made in the church. The first cemetery was demolished when this cemetery , St Louis Cemetery No 1 was established by Spanish Royal Decree of August 14, 1789. As the city grew St Louis No 2 was established on Claiborne Avenue in 1823 and St Louis No 3 on Esplanade Avenue in 1854.
