Metairie Cemetery
Orleans Parish, Louisiana

The land where this cemetery lies was once a horse track. The land was used a training ground during the Civil War, as the racetrack fell on hard times then. The Jockey Club that owned the track eventually went under and the owner turned the land into a cemetery in 1872.
This cemetery is well known for its grandiose monuments built for those who are buried here. From the pyramid tomb of the Brunswig family to the supposedly haunted Morales tomb to a small ruined castle of the Egan family, there are plenty of beautiful and interesting monuments to see here.
Some notables include many Louisiana Governors, Confederate Generals PGT Beauregard and John Bell Hood, and numerous Jazz musicians and actors. It was the original burial site for Confederate President Jefferson Davis and General Albert Sydney Johnson.
